Initially I was pleased with the Moultrie Game Spy D-40, with the exception of the cheap bungee cords that are completely inadequate for the hefty weight of the camera. Do yourself a favor and just throw them away. I opted to use a single drop-tine game camera mount (pushes into the ground) that easily allows you to make adjustments to the camera's position (height off the ground, tilt up or down, swivel left or right, etc.). But I digress...
About two months after buying my Game Spy D-40, I decided to purchase a Moultrie Game Spy I-40, and that is when I learned about Moultrie's terrible customer service. The user's manual referred me to their website for software updates that might be needed to operate the camera (some apparently had glitches). I expected to find the software update easily; instead I spent an hour searching through every link on their website and still came up empty-handed. I filled out their website's customer service form asking where I could find the software update. I never received a response. I also tried calling their customer service line only to repeatedly hear a recording telling me that due to a high volume of calls, callers should expect a long wait time. The message strongly urged the use of their website to avoid the wait. [Good luck with that.] Frustrated, I returned the I-40 to Amazon.
Because I was still pleased with my original Game Spy D-40, I decided to purchase two more from Amazon...a decision I have come to regret. A few months after purchased the first camera stopped taking photos at night. The second camera started acting up shortly thereafter, and completely stopped working after 8 months. OUT OF 3 CAMERAS, ONLY 1 IS STILL OPERATING AND THIS IS WITHIN A YEAR OF PURCHASE. I should also point out that none of these cameras were mishandled or even subject to the expected "wear and tear" most game cameras receive as the cameras were used to record wildlife in my own 1.5 A yard.
So now I'm trying to navigate Moultrie's customer service nightmare again in the hopes of getting the two non-functioning cameras repaired or replaced under the 1-year manufacturer's warranty. Note to buyers: GO TO MOULTRIE'S WEBSITE AND READ THEIR WARRANTY POLICY BEFORE BUYING!!!!! Moultrie requires you to call customer service (yes, the same line that tells you that you will be better served by their website) and describe the problem to their technicians before you can get instructions on how to proceed with any claim. The recording is nice enough to give you an estimated wait time. My latest attempt...84 minutes. Obviously I need to plan ahead and set aside a couple of hours of my time to complete this process. I'm not sure it is even worth it given that their website lists a bunch of warranty disclaimers and eligibility requirements that leads me to believe I am going to receive the same level of satisfaction with their warranty service as I have with their customer service......that is, NONE.
One thing seems clear.....Moultrie has no interest in repeat business. Rest assured, they will not be getting mine. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.
